The Kindest Surveillance: Smart Homes and the People We Are Trying to Protect

The question arrives in a text message, usually at night: do you think we should get cameras for Mom? The person asking is typically an adult child who lives three hundred miles away and has just watched a news story about an elderly person found days after a fall. The person being discussed has a name, a house, and a strong opinion about being discussed. Aging-in-place technology — cameras, motion sensors, fall detection, smart locks and doorbells — forces a trade that no product page ever names: dignity against safety. The adult child wants to know that their parent got up this morning. The parent wants not to be watched in their own home. Both are right, and the entire industry is built on the space between those two sentences without ever saying so. This article is written for the person making the decision on someone else’s behalf, because that person holds both ends of the trade and is the only one who can resolve it.
The Feeling First
Two People, Both Right
The asymmetry of worry is the whole story. The child imagines the fall that goes undiscovered — the days that pass before anyone notices, the difference a morning check might have made. The parent imagines the camera itself: a small device on a shelf that is also a standing reminder that the house is no longer fully theirs, that someone else is keeping an eye on them the way you keep an eye on a thing that might break. Neither imagination is unreasonable. That is why this category fails so often even when the hardware works: the failure is not technical, it is relational. The device does what it was built to do, and the person it watches feels the price of it every day, and neither side knows how to say so. The technology only works when both people can look at it and feel that they won.
The Market
A Category Built on Someone Else’s Decision
Aging in place is now a named product category with its own institutions. Mainstream review desks now maintain permanent guides to the category, per Wirecutter. The category sits inside the broader smart home market, worth roughly $162.8 billion in 2025 and projected at about $207 billion in 2026, per Grand View Research — but the aging segment is distinct in one structural way: its marketing speaks in the language of safety and independence, while its purchasing decision is usually made by someone who is neither the user nor the person who will live with the device.
That split is the market’s open secret. The product sells to the child, is installed in the parent’s house, and is justified with the word safety. The word is not false — awareness genuinely does help, and the reviews and advocacy literature say so — but it is incomplete. What the brochures do not say is that the same device is also a test of the relationship: it asks the parent to accept being the subject of someone else’s monitoring, and it asks the child to accept that they are now the one who watches. The industry has built a category on that transaction and named only one side of it.
The Pain
The Questions Nobody Puts on the Box
Four pains attach to this category, and none of them appears in the spec sheet.
1. Dignity has no checkbox. Constant watching changes behaviour. The person who knows a camera is on stops using the living room, stops having friends over, stops being themselves in their own house. No feature page measures this, and no review can, because the cost is borne in moments the child never sees. It is real, and it is the price of the reassurance being bought.
2. Consent was not asked, it was assumed. The adult child who installs a camera “for safety” has usually asked a version of the question and received an ambiguous answer, or has not asked at all. The monitoring is presented as a kindness, which makes refusal feel like ingratitude. That is a coercion problem wearing a cardigan, and it is the reason this category, more than any other in the smart home, needs the monitored person inside the decision from the first conversation.
3. The false reassurance. A camera that catches a fall after it happens is not a device that prevents one. Detection is real and valuable; prevention is a different claim, and no source in this article’s research supports the stronger one. The difference matters, because the family that believes the device prevented harm may relax in ways that the device was never built to justify.
4. The monitored person becomes the weakest link in their own care system. A monitoring account is a rich target. An aging parent’s monitoring account contains precisely the information a bad actor wants: an address, a routine, and the fact that someone is checking on the resident from far away.

The peer-reviewed literature is more honest than the marketing, and its direction of travel is consistent: detection works, privacy is the open problem. Note what these papers share: both treat privacy not as a luxury add-on but as a design constraint that must be engineered into the monitoring itself. The research question is not whether to monitor; it is how to monitor in a way that the monitored person could live with.
The camera-free alternative exists and is maturing. Wi-Fi sensing detects motion in the zone between the router and a stationary connected device, per Kaspersky, and vendors describe it as enabling motion detection, activity recognition and localization without cameras — a company claim, per the component vendor Suntsu, and labelled as such. For the aging-in-place question, that is the most important sentence in the category: the reassurance that someone got up this morning can often be delivered without a single image of them being taken. The least invasive sensor that answers the actual question is a design principle before it is a shopping list.

Make the Decision Like a Consent Conversation
Four rules govern the purchase, and the first one comes before any hardware.
1. Start with the least invasive sensor that answers the actual question. The question is not “record everything.” It is usually “did they get up this morning” or “did they come home at a normal hour.” A presence sensor answers that with no image; a camera is the last rung of the ladder, not the first. 1. These are not medical devices. Fall-detection and monitoring products are not medical devices unless they have been specifically cleared as such, and nothing in this article’s research supports a claim that any consumer sensor prevents harm. Buy the technology for awareness, and do not let a product page sell you certainty about prevention.
