Your router is the one device in the house you cannot switch off and still call the place home. The television can be unplugged, the speakers silenced, the cameras covered with a thumb. How to Find Out What Your Router Is Doing

You will not be offered a choice about whether Wi-Fi sensing exists. You will be offered, at best, a choice about whether it is on. Four steps put that choice in your hands.

1. Find out whether your router or mesh system offers sensing. The capability travels under names like presence detection, motion sensing, or Wi-Fi sensing, and it arrives in firmware, per Spatial Intelligence. Check the vendor’s feature pages and the firmware release notes for the model in your house. If you rent your router from an internet provider, the vendor is your ISP, and the question belongs in their documentation, not in a forum.

2. Think about the genuinely useful cases before dismissing the technology. 4. Treat “no camera” as a real privacy improvement and simultaneously a disclosure problem. The absence of a lens removes the most invasive possible record — the image — and that is genuinely better. It also removes the visible indicator that a record exists at all. Prefer products with local processing and an explicit, documented toggle. A sensing feature you can switch off and audit is a convenience. A sensing feature you cannot find is a surveillance system with good branding.

The Fine Print

What Your Router Is Not Doing

1. Your router is not currently identifying you. The distance between a laboratory with controlled antenna placements and a hallway with a pile of coats is enormous, and honest coverage keeps it enormous.

The Last Word

The router was already the most intimate device in the house. Every site visited, every hour of use, every device that speaks to the internet passes through it, and nobody asked permission for any of it. Sensing adds a new axis to that record: the body.
