The most expensive battery in the American home is not in the basement, the garage wall, or the utility’s substation. It is the electric vehicle sitting in the driveway, holding between sixty and a hundred-plus kilowatt-hours of stored energy, doing nothing from the moment it finishes its commute until the next one begins. Vehicle-to-home, or V2H, is the technology that finally puts that battery to work — letting the car power the house through an outage, the way a generator would, without the generator’s noise, fuel, or maintenance. The idea is almost unbearably elegant. The execution is where the elegance ends. As the American Solar Energy Society explains, bidirectional charging permits electricity to move from vehicle to home, unlike a one-direction charger, per its explainer — and the gap between that one sentence and a kitchen that stays lit through a blackout is filled with compatibility lists, transfer switches, permits, and price tags that the charger marketing never mentions. This article is about that gap.
The Feeling First
The Dread of the Dark, and the Car That Could Answer It
There is a particular fear that outage season teaches, and it is not the fear of the dark. It is the fear of the inventory: the refrigerator full of food, the medication that must stay cold, the well pump, the sump pump, the child’s nebulizer, the work deadline on a dead laptop. In that moment, the car in the driveway — the same car that made the morning commute feel effortless — becomes the most heartbreaking object on the property, because it holds exactly what the house needs and is structurally unable to give it. V2H resolves that specific ache. The transport asset becomes the backup asset; the thing that takes you away from home becomes the thing that holds the home together.
The emotional promise is resilience without sacrifice: no generator to maintain, no fuel to rotate, no carbon monoxide to fear, and a battery that is already paid for. That promise is real — and the fine print is that it is conditional. The vehicle must support bidirectional power. The home needs hardware that GM describes, in its own 9 June 2026 release, as a V2H-capable GM EV, a properly equipped home, and proper grid interconnection. Three conditions, each with a price tag, and the marketing voice tends to speak only of the first. This article exists to speak of all three.
The Market
The Automaker Discovers the Home
The market’s direction is unambiguous: automakers are moving from selling cars to selling home energy systems. GM’s June 2026 release lays out the requirement stack plainly — a V2H-capable GM EV, properly equipped home, proper grid interconnection — and its GM Energy V2H bundle page is the storefront for that ambition. The pattern repeats across the industry: the charger is becoming a gateway product for a home-energy portfolio, and the backup story is the emotional engine of the pitch.
The consumer interest is equally clear. Outage frequency, extreme weather, and the rising cost of whole-home generators have made backup power a mainstream purchase category, and the EV owner arrives at it with an advantage no generator owner has: the battery is already in the driveway. As NeoCharge’s consumer explainer notes, compatibility varies — which is the market’s honest summary in two words. The marketing says “power your home.” The engineering says “if your vehicle, your charger, your panel, and your utility all agree.”
The Pain
The Compatibility Stack Nobody Puts on the Brochure
1. The vehicle is only the first of five gates. V2H requires, in order: a vehicle with bidirectional capability; a bidirectional charger or vehicle-side port that supports it; enablement hardware in the home; a transfer mechanism to isolate the house from the grid; and utility interconnection approval. GM’s own June 2026 release names three of the five; the permit and the electrician complete the set. A buyer who checks only the first gate has checked nothing.
2. The price on the charger page is not the installed price. The hardware figure excludes installation, permits, electrical upgrades and taxes unless a source says otherwise — and the typical source does not. The honest number is the electrician’s quote plus the permit fee plus the utility’s interconnection review, added to the hardware. The gap between those two numbers is where the disappointment lives.
3. V2H and V2G are not the same sentence. Vehicle-to-home powers your house. Vehicle-to-grid sells power to the utility, with different metering, different tariffs, and different regulatory territory. The consumer explainer from NeoCharge keeps them separate, and so should any buyer: one is a resilience purchase, the other is a participation in the electricity market, and they are bought and installed differently.
4. The promotional clock is ticking. The GM Energy enablement-kit page shows a $6,999 list price with a $5,599 promotional price through 31 August 2026 at 9 PM ET, installation and taxes excluded. A promotion is not a price cut; it is a deadline. Buyers who quote the promotional number in September will be quoted a different one.

Read the three lines as what they are: a promotional offer with a deadline, an accessory-channel MSRP, and a two-year-old media estimate of a larger package. The only figure any buyer should take to an electrician is the first — and even that one is incomplete until installation, permits and taxes are added. The architecture of the entire category is visible in these three lines: the same named product family, three different numbers, and no single source that will total the installed cost for you. That task belongs to the buyer and the installer, which is exactly why the buying advice that follows is about process, not prices.

The Buy
Six Questions Before the First Quote
The V2H purchase is not a product purchase. It is a home project, and it should be planned like one.
1. Inventory the loads before you price the hardware. Walk the house and list what must run in an outage: refrigerator, lights, router, medical devices, well or sump pump, heating controls. Add the wattages. This list — not the brochure — determines what size of enablement kit and what panel work your home needs. GM’s requirements release assumes a properly equipped home; the load list is how you discover whether yours is.
2. Define the outage you are planning for. Eight hours with the lights on is a different project from three days with the freezer full. V2H’s strength is the big battery already in the car; its weakness is that the car may leave. If the household’s only vehicle must commute during an outage, the backup plan needs a second answer — a small generator or a partial battery — and the V2H hardware should be sized accordingly.
3. Verify the vehicle, in writing, before anything else. Confirm that your exact model year and trim supports bidirectional power. Compatibility varies, per NeoCharge’s explainer, and GM’s own release conditions everything on a V2H-capable vehicle. A dealer’s assurance is not a spec sheet; get the vehicle’s official capability statement.
4. Get the installer’s line-item quote, and read it against the hardware page. The $5,599 promotional figure excludes installation and taxes, per the GM Energy page. A proper quote itemizes: hardware, transfer switch, panel work, permit fees, labor, and the utility’s interconnection charge. If the quote arrives as one lump sum, send it back.
5. Ask about the warranty and the battery, in the same conversation. Bidirectional cycling is a new duty for a traction battery, and the fine print lives in two places: the vehicle’s battery warranty and the home hardware’s warranty. Ask whether V2H discharge affects the vehicle warranty, who warrants the transfer equipment, and what happens to the system if the vehicle is sold. The American Solar Energy Society’s explainer frames V2H as a real home-energy option; the warranty questions are where it stops being theoretical.
6. Time the purchase against the promotion and the permit, not the other way around. The promotional price expires 31 August 2026 at 9 PM ET, per the company page — but a deadline is not a reason to skip the permit. Interconnection approval can take weeks, and an installed system without approval is a paperweight with a transfer switch. Start the process, then time the purchase to the process.
The Fine Print
What the Driveway Pitch Does Not Say
1. Prices are packages, not products. The $5,599/$6,999 enablement kit, the $8,998 accessories-page bundle, and the $12,699 Car and Driver package estimate are different configurations from different dates and channels, per GM Energy, GMC accessories and Car and Driver. Averaging them produces a number that corresponds to nothing that can be bought.
2. Hardware price is not installed cost. Installation, permits, electrical upgrades and taxes are excluded from the cited figures, per the GM Energy page. The electrician’s quote is the only number that matters, and it comes after the load inventory.
3. V2H is not V2G. Powering the house and selling to the grid are different systems with different hardware, metering and rules, per NeoCharge’s guide. A buyer who expects the V2H bundle to pay itself off through energy sales has bought the wrong mental model.
4. Not every EV and not every charger is bidirectional. The Last Word
The biggest battery in the American driveway is also the least used one, and V2H is the technology that finally puts it to work. The idea deserves its elegance: resilience without a generator, backup power without the fuel, and a home that keeps its cool through the week the grid loses its. But the purchase is a stack, not a product — vehicle, charger, enablement hardware, transfer equipment, interconnection, permit, electrician — and the stack is only as strong as its least verified link. The prices on the pages will keep changing, the promotions will keep expiring, and the compatibility lists will keep growing. What will not change is the method: inventory the loads, define the outage, verify the vehicle, itemize the quote, and read the warranty twice. Do that, and the car in the driveway stops being a promise and becomes a power plant.
